In 1984 British rail announced that Thorn-EMI had won a £25 million contract to supply computerised ticket-issuing systems for use in both fixed and portable roles.
The picture shows the Portable Ticket-Issuing System (PORTIS), a battery-operated microprocessor-based, portable machine printing tickets from blank stock.
