Colossus Computer Formally Designated as IEEE Milestone at The National Museum of Computing

A historic moment for global technological heritage has officially been written into the archives at The National Museum of Computing (TNMoC). On Tuesday 29th September 2026, museum representatives, tech historians, and volunteers gathered to celebrate the formal designation of the treasured Colossus Computer as an IEEE Milestone.

The IEEE Milestones Program recognises technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity by placing permanent bronze plaques at the sites of unique, transformative technical achievements. This global honour places Colossus alongside world-changing innovations like the Apollo Moon Landing and the birth of the Internet, cementing its status as one of the most significant advancements in technical history.

The Unveiling Ceremony

The permanent bronze plaque was officially unveiled at the museum by TNMoC Chairman Dr Andrew Herbert and Professor Martin Bastiaans of the IEEE.

The unveiling followed a series of presentations dedicated to:

●     The complex history and technical triumph of the Colossus restoration project.

●     The global mission, history, and ongoing work of the IEEE.

Celebrating the Community

The event highlighted the collaborative effort required to preserve this vital piece of computing history. TNMoC extends its deepest thanks to the IEEE History Committee and all the representatives who travelled to celebrate this momentous occasion.

The museum also acknowledges its incredible community of volunteers, supporters, and trustees whose dedication makes it possible to keep this rich history alive for future generations.
